Pangea Day: Thru the World's Eyes

Pangea_day_2

On Saturday, May 10 at 18.00 GMT you can be part of a unique event bringing the world together through film:

"The Pangea Day Mission & Purpose

Pangea Day is a global event bringing the world together through film.

Why? In a world where people are often divided by borders, difference, and conflict, it's easy to lose sight of what we all have in common. Pangea Day seeks to overcome that – to help people see themselves in others – through the power of film.

The Pangea Day Event

Starting at 18:00 GMT on May 10, 2008, locations in Cairo, Kigali, London, Los Angeles, Mumbai, and Rio de Janeiro will be linked for a live program of powerful films, live music, and visionary speakers. The entire program will be broadcast – in seven languages – to millions of people worldwide through the internet, television, and mobile phones.

The 24 short films to be featured have been selected from an international competition that generated more than 2,500 submissions from over one hundred countries. The films were chosen based on their ability to inspire, transform, and allow us see the world through another person's eyes.

The program will also include a number of exceptional speakers and musical performers. Queen Noor of Jordan, CNN's Christiane Amanpour, musician/activist Bob Geldof, and Iranian rock phenom Hypernova are among those taking part."

Pangea Day is in an initiative from Jehane Noujaim, a well known Egyptian American filmmaker. She is best known for her documentaries Control Room which explored the role of Arab and Western media in the run-up to the war in Iraq and for Startup.com that gave a fascinating inside view of the birth of an Internet startup.

In 2006, Ms. Noujaim was one of three winners of the prestigious TED prize. In addition to a $100,000 award each winner is granted a wish to be fulfilled with the aid of many organizations associated with TED. Jehane's wish was "to bring the world  together for one day a year through the power of film." And on May 10 her wish - Pangea Day - will be born.

This unique four-hour event will be broadcast in many countries via cable television and will be available via a streaming live broadcast on the Web and mobile phones. In addition there will be Pangea Day parties in public venues as well as in private homes where the broadcast can be viewed.
